He earned his Ph.D. in Crop Genetics and Breeding  from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China National Rice Research Institute, following an M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from The University of Agriculture, Peshawar, Pakistan. His research focuses on gene mapping, QTL analysis, molecular and mutation breeding, genome editing, and functional genomics in rice, with extensive expertise in CRISPR/Cas9, RNA-Seq, and advanced molecular assays. Dr. Sohail has conducted significant postdoctoral and doctoral research on rice flowering regulation, male sterility, heading date QTLs, and plant architecture, alongside earlier work on maize, mungbean, wheat, and chickpea improvement. He received his MBBS from Bengbu Medical College and PhD in Internal Medicine from Shanghai Medical University, and completed postdoctoral training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, USA. Prof. Lu has dedicated over three decades to clinical practice, education, and research in infectious diseases, with major contributions to HIV/AIDS functional cure, emerging and re-emerging infections, rational antibiotic use, and severe respiratory and CNS infections. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals including NEJM, Nature, and Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy, authored 15 books, holds 15 patents, and has led more than 60 major research grants.
